This cup is beautiful and sophisticated.
An elegant, small-capacity teacup, it is wonderfully smooth and unusual soft white Celadon. It is purposefully thick-walled, has a nice heft to it and feels incredible in the hand. This cup’s size and shape make it a good choice for Asian-style service. The cool white interior provides the perfect background for appreciating the hue of any tea’s liquor.
A subtle craze pattern (a network of fine cracks) is present throughout the glaze (see close-up photo). Over time and use, these cracks may become more prominent as they allow tea liquor to seep in and stain them. The darker the tea liquor is, the more noticeable the craze pattern will become. This effect is prized by many, as it gives the cup character and makes each piece all the more unique. When used in Pu-erh or oolong service, when a ‘teapot-painting brush’ is being used to bathe the pot, this cup may also be ‘painted’ with the steeped liquor, in which case the crazing will develop a stunningly beautiful depth of color over time.
This cup is considered by many to be one of the most elegant available today, and feels so rich in the hand. It would be lovely as a seasonal alternative to our ‘summer bowl’ cup, the White Low Teacup.
Please Note:
Slight variations in the painting, colors, tooling, patterning and kiln effects of Chinese and Japanese tea wares are to be expected. We have carefully photographed this item as best as possible – please be aware that different device screens can render colors and subtle tones slightly differently.
