Kutani ware Porcelain
Made in Japan
Height: 3.4″
Functional capacity: 6 oz / 177 ml

This teacup features a lovely array of expressive pink and white cosmos flowers against a striking red background.  It is produced by Seikou, a company located near the historic home of Kutani ware in Ishikawa prefecture.  Established in the early 1900’s, Seikou specializes in crafting beautiful and affordable pieces.  They use transfer sheets to ‘print’ their designs and glazes onto the porcelain.  Seikou formulates all their glazes and creates their own transfer sheets in-house.  The thick glaze on the finished pieces have much the same look as hand-painted wares.

This cup is made of porcelain, which is a hard, fine-grained, nonporous ceramic ware. It is very white and extremely durable.  Many consider porcelain to be the ideal material for steeping all types of tea. The cool white interior provides the perfect backdrop for appreciating the color of any tea liquor.  The cup’s exterior wall has a series of subtle ridges which are almost undetectable to the eye, but noticeable in the hand.  These ridges provide some extra grip and make the cup easy to hold.

Kutani ware is a type of Japanese porcelain known for its colorful overglaze enamel decorations.   The style is named after the village of Kutani (located in present day Ishikawa prefecture), where multiple kilns began producing porcelain wares in the mid-1600s during the early Edo period.  Rich blue, green, purple, red and yellow glazes are closely associated with Kutani ware.

Please Note:
Slight variations in the painting, colors, tooling, patterning and kiln effects of Chinese and Japanese tea wares are to be expected. We have carefully photographed this item as best as possible – please be aware that different device screens can render colors and subtle tones slightly differently.
