Flower-scented teas are a Chinese specialty that were first made during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and later reached the pinnacle of excellence in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644.) The most famous of these teas are sweet-scented jasmine, rose, lychee and osmanthus-scented teas.

The early Chinese tea masters who first experimented with and then excelled at producing scented teas found that scented teas quickly became esteemed world-wide. Using the wide variety of fruits and aromatic flowers that are indigenous to Asia, these tea masters had a large palate from which to draw.
With the opening of trade routes via the Silk Route, the Tea Horse Route and Clipper Ship Trade, we now have a cultured taste for these exotic combinations.
Tea Trekker, true to the moniker, is happy to offer many classic and quite a few contemporary scented teas for your enjoyment.
We scent our Earl Grey Tea with natural (not artificial) bergamot oil, which we blend every week of the year. If you happen to be in our store when Bob has just blended a batch – it is an aromatic treat indeed!

The culmination of the art of the floral scenting of leaf tea has to be the development of and increase in the popularity of Jasmine Tea.

All of Tea Trekker’s Jasmine Teas are crafted using traditional Chinese methods of scenting. This careful scenting yields premium, traditional Jasmine tea.

Lapsang Souchong is one of China’s oldest teas, among the first teas that Dutch traders brought back to Europe in the 17th century.

Lapsang Souchong tea undergoes a ‘smoking’ process using locally-cut pine logs; this classifies it as a scented tea.

The smoking sheds used to scent Tea Trekker’s Lapsang Souchong are located in the Wuyi Mts. in a protected bamboo and pine forest nature preserve. Mary Lou’s photograph (left) shows one of these smoking sheds, as seen when we were granted special permission to visit this important tea-producing area in 2006.

Many love to drink this tea ‘straight up’ for a very stout cup; others prefer to add a pinch or two of this ‘tarry tea’ to their favorite black tea blend.
