2009 China Oolong Teas

Fujian Province, China

For tea enthusiast fans of Anxi oolongs these teas need no introduction. We have featured many semi-ball rolled style teas ( both modern green style and traditional roasted style ) from this region for several years, including the celebrated Tieguanyin; Mao Xie ( Hairy Crab ), and Tou Tian Xiang ( Imperial Gold). Fujian tea producers like to boast that there are over 12 varieties and cultivars of tea bushes growing in this region, and we continually hunt for more delicious examples of them.

Guangdong Province, China

In the north east region of Guangdong Province (nearby the city of Chazhou ) the Phoenix Mountains produce China’s fabled Feng Huang Dan Cong teas. Whereas the most famous of the Wu Yi Shan rock oolong teas ( yan cha ) are plucked from old, single-trunk tea bushes, Feng Huang Dan Cong teas are plucked from old, arbor-style tea trees that are hundreds of years old and have grown to be over 20 feet tall. These tea trees are named after the ‘fragrances’ that the aroma of the tea liquor is reminiscent of.

This grouping of three teas offers a great lesson in how the effects of place, or terroir ( geography, climate and weather) and the variety of tea bush cultivar influence the taste of teas from the same region. All three of these teas from Nantou County are manufactured in the ‘Nantou style’ of semi-ball- rolled teas. But they are made in different places and elevations in the county and from fresh leaf from different tea bush cultivars. Each is excellent, reflecting the differences in terroir. Tea farmers know which tea plants will yield the best tasting teas in their environments, and their selections reflect how terroir ‘interprets’ the taste of the tea bushes. We have chosen these blends instead of ‘farmer specific’ teas because sometimes those teas are too green and too astringent. These are Nantou oolongs offered the way Taiwanese tea enthusiast sell, purchase and enjoy their local oolong teas.

Tung Ting tea is Taiwan’s most famous semi-ball rolled style tea. The mountain is located in Lugu Township, Nantou County, Taiwan, and is known for producing delicious, substantial and chewy, very floral teas. Tung Ting teas are priced according to where on the mountain they are from: the higher the elevation, the more difficult the growing conditions and the smaller the harvests. Our two offerings are both blended teas from the leaf of different tea farmers, blended and skillfully fired by a master blender to bring out the natural rich, flavor and arresting floral aroma of the leaf. Both teas have a lingering finish. In each case, the cultivars are different and are a composite of the leaf grown in that area.
